What is the Difference Between the Service Engine Lights?

Service Engine Soon vs Check Engine ? Spokane WA ? Wendle Ford Nissan

What is the difference between the ‘maintenance due’ light, ‘service engine’ light and ‘check engine’ light on your vehicle?  It can be scary to see either of these lights brightening up your dashboard.  The meaning of each can vary depending on your make and model.

Check Engine Light/Service Engine Soon

The check engine and service engine soon lights are an indication that something is wrong.  The icon you see will vary depending on the model of your vehicle.  It can be as simple as a loose gas cap, but it can also mean something serious like an issue with the fuel system.  When the light is illuminated, it is important to bring your vehicle in and have it checked as soon as possible.

If the check engine light or service engine soon light is flashing, it could indicate a critical issue.  The problem may be an engine misfire that could damage the catalytic converters.  In the case of a blinking check engine light, it is strongly recommended that you have your vehicle serviced immediately.

Maintenance Due

The maintenance due light is an indication that your vehicle is due in for maintenance.

Maintenance reminders may include:

  • Oil service
  • Filter service
  • Tire rotate
  • Tire maintenance due
  • Tire pressure
  • Other
